2. Surfing in Kuta Beach
Surfing in Kuta beach Bali is the perfect place for the first-timers! Regardless of your skill level, all the instructors will guarantee that you will be able to at least experience the thrill of standing on your board and riding the waves within the 2 hours lessons.
Although surfing requires agility to stand fast on your board, even if you are slow and have a terrible sense of balance, most of these instructors are amazing at helping you stabilize the board, by riding behind you in the waters. The quality of your instructor really lies on your luck. I heard a little rumour from my own teacher that some of the instructors couldn’t even surf themselves. Ultimate fake it till you make it vibes.
My Experience
I was crazy fortunate to have an equally crazy instructor who extended my lesson to another 4 hours. Utterly obsessed with the waves, I wouldn’t give up during my session. The beginners lesson will typically start with the white-water waves. Once mastered, you may be able to advance to the unbroken waves.
Since I got the hang of the white-water waves pretty quickly, my instructor brought me out to the deeper end to try the unbroken waves. Which I failed miserably at it. Certainly, with much higher waves, I must’ve been scared and jittery of being swept away. Nevertheless, I was so satisfied by my first lesson, that I came back for several more. To the dismay of my mom who had to accompany me.
Price
Tons of beachside stalls stretches as long as the beach, walk up to any random surf stand and ask for the best price. This is the cheapest and easiest way to learn surfing. Just trust your gut and follow your instincts when negotiating. As an Indonesian, I managed to snag Rp 150,000 ($14) for a lesson. I believe they will charge more for foreign tourists. Even after negotiating the price, I often feel bad because it is so cheap. I tend to tip more, according to how good the guide is because I think they deserve it.
3. Hang Out at Fancy Kuta Beach Clubs and Bars
Indeed, you certainly cannot miss the flamboyant and beautifully designed beach clubs and bars facing the ocean. From a nightclub haven to a chill summer vibe pool beach club, Kuta is the center of all the action. From international bands and DJs, infinity pools and sexily named cocktails, if you’re one to be down for a good time and meet other young tourists like yourself, check them out.
4. Take a Stroll
The most obvious albeit underrated activity. Kuta beach stretches far, that you can’t see the ends of the beach. Perfect for all who enjoys jogging by the sunrise or sunset. Or simply stroll with your loved ones admiring the scenery. Soak in the holiday atmosphere and bask in the wind and sand. The sand is soft and very fine, an absolute delight to stroll with your shoes off and feet in the water.
5. Splash in the Waters
The vast expansive sand and shallow waters at the shore makes Kuta beach Bali perfect for feet dipping. A full-on dive for children and adults is possible too. Perfect for children! The waves are not strong but enough to enjoy a little splash.
6. Braid your Hair
Along the Kuta beach Bali, there will be many peddlers offering their various services. One of them is to braid your hair, afro style. Doubt there is any cultural significance to this, it is simply for tourists to spend a little sum to get their hair done for fun. If you’re feeling a little adventurous, go for it!
7. Massage
Massage services are also very common with many peddlers walking around to offer their services. Duration ranges from 15 to 30 mins, perfect for those who enjoy them with the beach view and supporting local business in Kuta beach Bali. However, if you do not want them, you have to be very stern and ignore them as they are very pushy.
8. Fake Tattoos
Children, if your parents forbid you to get a permanent tat, fake tattoos abound! Getting that holiday mood does help to open the wallet a little easier. Get one for cheap with a huge range of designs available. Most last about 2/3 days, so why not?
9. Kuta Shopping – Handmade Souvenirs
Kuta shopping is highly popular for all things Balinese. With local shops lining up the coastal area and beyond, many tourists love this area for the variety of items you can buy. From handmade bracelets and keychains to the famous Poppies Lane known for selling Balinese souvenirs to western tourists, there is something for everyone in the area.
From vintage toy shops, streetwear brands, food chains, local food, massage parlours, barbers, surf boards and Balinese tie-dyed shirts, to the huge Beachwalk Shopping Centre at the heart of the bustling area, you can spend the whole evening walking around the endless alleys of Kuta till your feet drop and your wallet burst. There is certainly something for everyone in Kuta beach Bali.
10. Eat Local Food
Food! Forget all the action, if you’re just touching down to the beach to say, “I was here” and leave, make sure you don’t forget the food. Down to try real local food with prices less than $2? Definitely, head down to Dewi Sri Food Centre and have your pick from a plethora of dishes from Bakso, to sate babi (pork on sticks). My favourite sate babi of all time in Bali is from Pan Bin Bin. Nothing beats this in all my time eating pork in Bali so if you spot them, you have to try it!

Things to Note
1. parking
The parking situation in Kuta beach Bali area is absolutely horrendous, even more so at night. Planning to drive to the beach? Ditch that idea right away. The roads are narrow and one-away. In addition to the lack of parking space, many resort to parking on the roadside, further congesting the area. Ride a motorcycle if you have. Seeing that you’ll be stick in a traffic jam for hours, I suggest calling a Grab or Gojek instead. Alight at the start of the area and then walk into the beach area.
2. peddlers
As Kuta is a very crowded area, there is a saturation of peddlers trying to get customers. Moreover, be prepared to be visited by peddlers offering you things every 10 to 15 minutes if you are seated on the sunbeds. It is honestly quite a sad sight and yet also annoying since it happens way too frequently, many of whom crossed my personal space and asked intrusive questions about where I am from.
The whole time I pretended to be an antisocial kid because I was ignoring their approaches. There are many more beaches to lounge around in Bali, so don’t be too quick to write-off Bali beaches just yet. You can check out my other posts for other best blue water beaches in Bali here.
3. no toilets
Toilets are practically non-existent here. There is a small shower spot made out of makeshift wood scattered in the area, but if you need to do your business, you might be better off heading to Beachwalk Shopping Centre for their toilets. Unfortunately, not the most convenient here. So make sure your bowels are empty and your tummy not rumbling before heading down to Kuta beach Bali.
