If you’re looking for an action packed adventure in Bali with undisturbed nature, Hidden Canyon Beji Guwang is where you should be at. A very underrated attraction in Bali, the Hidden Canyon is quietly tucked in Gianyar, the area right beside the popular and touristy Ubud, and near attractions like the Bali Zoo and Safari.
Hidden Canyon Adventure Itinerary
Adventure Trail
The Hidden Canyon is full of lush green trees, beautiful rocks terrain carved by nature and clear fresh green river waters that holds a spectacular sight as you venture through the area. 100% natural adventure, you would have to swim, climb the rocks and across gushing river throughout the entire journey.
If you can’t swim, the guide will find alternative ways to get you through, sometimes even resorting to pull you along if necessary.
The whole experience will take somewhere between 2 to 3 hours.
Just look at this view! My camera certainly does not do this justice.
My absolute favourite place in Bali, I would always free up an afternoon to explore this gem because even after multiple visits, I still find it magical and there are always new areas to be explored. The locals are still working on exploring the area available for visits, so the route is always expanding!
Getting There
The Hidden Canyon Beji Guwang is about 30 minutes from Kuta and Ubud, easily accessed by motorcycle, car or Grab taxis. It is right next to the famous Tegenungan Waterfall.
I highly recommend driving around or hiring a driver if you can’t drive. It is much more convenient and cheaper. You will also be able to reach areas beyond the famous beaches and Ubud.

Hidden Canyon Entrance Fee and Tour
The entrance fee is Rp 200,000 per person which includes a local guide, water, lockers and towel. The local guide is compulsory to access the canyon as he will tell you the areas safe for tourists to explore and exit routes, as well as help you along the way if you need any assistance. Don’t underestimate them! I relied a lot on my guide for my hike (as usual) and double up as a great photographer along the way. Don’t forget to tip them (:
Best Time to Visit
Oddly, the quietest time to visit is actually on the weekends! This place is most frequented by travellers and most would think weekends will be busy and tend to avoid them, making the weekends and even better time to explore. I went on a Saturday and I did not see any other people along the way.
Best months to visit are dry season in April to October, but honestly, it is great all year round. I visited in December and as long as it didn’t rain a day or two before, you will be able to see the blue and green waters.
Even if you do see people, the guides will stagger the groups to give each person comfortable distance and time to work through the routes. You can easily take short breaks as photoshoots anyways!
What to Pack
Water Bottle | Water will be provided but it’s always good to pack extra! |
Camera | Obviously! Add water sealing if you can. |
waterproofing case for phone | Very handy especially if it drop into the water |
Sunscreen | Lock that UV protection in |
Dry Bag (optional) | The guide will have a dry bag that you can put your stuff in but if you want to pack extras snacks etc you can bring more |
Power Bank | The weather is hot so your phones and cameras battery will drain very quickly |
Water Shoes | The terrains are rocky and slippery. Great for traction and protecting your feet from sharp rocks |
What to Wear
Comfortable swimwear or tshirts that dries easily as you will be getting wet! I wore my trusty active wear for great comfort and mobility.
What to Expect on the Trek?
Action, scenic tropical trees and fascinating rocks and river. You will be required to climb up and down the rocks, cross the stream, swim in the river, and more. If you love swimming, you can ask the guide for the areas to dip and enjoy the water.
Some sections of the trail have fast currents where you might be washed along if you fell from the rocks. If so, just stay calm and grab on the nearest rock you can find.
There are also various exits if the trek is too strenuous for you, if you want a glimpse of the beauty and none of the sweat.
Who is this for?
Well, if you read till here, this is certainly your kind of excitement to look for in Bali! For anyone looking for a great scenery and some physical capabilities to carry you through, you have to visit this at least once in your life!

Local Cock Fight Betting Tournament
After your adventure, if you’re in luck, you will find yourself witnessing one of the oldest betting sport in the country – cock fighting. The tournament ring is right at the entrance of the Hidden Canyon and will be filled with vehement locals participating in the action.
The schedule is not fixed and published anywhere so encounters to the competition is truly by fate. You can ask your guide if there’s a fight the day you’re visiting, or when the next one will be.
Cock fighting is an age old hobby, typically for men, in which people rear and train cocks to attack by provocation. A tiny knife will be attached to the feet. After the cocks attack each other, they will be checked to see which has died or is badly injured in the round. If neither died, another round will ensue.
The cocks that passed away will then be defeathered and probably cooked afterwards.
Each round’s duration is determined by a sinking coconut husk cut in a shape of a bowl in a water tray, which is around 20 seconds (yes I timed it).
The bettings are all private, amongst individual of friends, so you can definitely join in the action, and there will be MCs hyping the crowd up to cheer for the strongest cock.
It was quite a brutal sight and definitely not for the faint-hearted, but it was possibly the most local experience I had in Bali and truly an unforgettable one.
